Vitamins And Minerals- Benefits Of A Healthy Diet

We have all been taught about the importance of feeding on balanced diets that contain carbohydrates, proteins, vitamins, minerals and water. Apart from this knowledge, some of us do not really know what comprises these elements. Well, let us first note that, these elements are contained in a variety of foods, but in different quantities. Let us take a detailed look and see what vitamins and minerals really are and how they are beneficial to our bodies.

Vitamins and minerals are commonly known as protective food, meaning that, they contain elements that help our bodies fight diseases and recover when attacked by disease-causing pathogens. They do this by boosting the immune system and helping cells and other body organs to do their job as required.

There are many types of vitamins and minerals. Vitamins come in two categories; fat soluble and water soluble. Vitamins, A, D, E and K fall in the fat soluble category, meaning that, they can dissolve in fat and be stored in the body. Vitamins C and B complex are water soluble and are not stored in the body and hence need to be taken regularly as they are passed out of the body with urine.

Minerals are inorganic elements which are obtained from the soil and water. They are absorbed by plants and when we consume the plant products, they get into our bodies. Some are required in large quantities and others in small ones, but all the same, they are all very important in helping the body function normally. They include calcium, zinc, potassium, iodine, iron and copper. It is important to make sure that vitamins and minerals are consumed in their right proportions as over or under-consumption has its own detrimental effects.

What It Is & Why It Works:

The Essiac formula was popularized by Rene Caisse, a French Canadian
nurse who learned the formula from a friend who had received it from
an Ojibwa medicine man as a remedy for cancer. Her life’s work
involved using the formula on thousands of cancer patients with
excellent success rates. The original formula consisted of burdock
root, sheep sorrel, turkey rhubarb, and slippery elm which was brewed
into a tea and administered as a beverage. The basic actions of these
herbs are as follows:
Burdock: Contains proven anti-bacterial, anti-fungal, and tumor
protective compounds. Regarded as a blood purifier , organ tonifier,
lymph system cleanser, and poison neutralizer.

Sheep Sorrell: High in chlorophyll, this herb helps to carry oxygen
through the bloodstream. It improves liver, digestive, and bowel
functions and is indicated for inflammatory diseases, tumors, cancers,
and urinary/kidney diseases.

Slippery Elm Bark: Contains the compound inulin which acts on liver,
pancreas, and spleen. Diuretic, laxative, and reduces swelling. The
mucilaginous nature of this herb is soothing to the digestive tract.

Turkey Rhubarb: Acts as a laxative and purgative, its cooling
properties stimulate the colon and restore the stomach and liver. It
both cools and invigorates stagnant blood. Used as stomach soother,
liver cleanser, and for tumors and cancers.

Watercress: Although not included in Rene Caisse’s original formula,
the chemist who developed the formula for Essiac Herbals™ added this
herb for its high vitamin and mineral content. Native Americans used
watercress for liver and kidney disorders. Well known as a blood
purifier and system cleanser.

filtered, distilled, reverse-osmosis, or spring water from reliable
sources facilitates the body’s absorption of nutrients and herbal
compounds.

Possible Drug Interactions:
There are no known drug interactions. Always consult a physician
before beginning to take an herbal supplement while taking
prescription medications.
